Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ highly anticipated next chapter in their cinematic MonsterVerse to film on location in Mexico
Mexico City, August 15, 2017 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are bringing one of the most iconic big screen monsters of all time to Mexico when cameras roll on a key sequence in director Michael Dougherty’s highly anticipated follow-up to the global 2014 blockbuster Godzilla. With the cooperation of local authorities, the as-yet-untitled epic action adventure, which began principal photography in June, will film on location in Mexico City from August 21st to August 23rd, preceded by a press event taking place at noon on Tuesday, August 15th., at the city’s Jefatura de Gobierno (City Hall), Plaza de la Constitución S/N, Col. Centro, CP 06066.
Set to stomp into cinemas in Mexico and around the world in 2019, this thrilling new chapter in the Studios’ cinematic MonsterVerse follows in the mighty footsteps of Gareth Edwards’s 2014 smash Godzilla, which earned $529.1 million worldwide and $152.5 million in Asia alone; and this year’s Kong: Skull Island from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, which took in $566.7 million worldwide, with $245.5 million coming from Asia.
The new adventure pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The film follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized creatures, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
The film’s acclaimed ensemble cast is led by Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Conjuring films), and Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), the latter two reprising their Godzilla roles; Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street, Manchester by the Sea); Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (Get Out); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s Silicon Valley); Charles Dance (HBO’s Game of Thrones); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton); Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
Michael Dougherty (Krampus) directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary. Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, production designer Scott Chambliss, editor Roger Barton, costume designer Louise Mingenbach, and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (Life of Pi ).
A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film is slated for release beginning March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd.
